Les Miserables starts 25 years after the French Revolution and Robespierre's Terror. The story begins in 1815, the year Napoleon's reign ended at the Battle of Waterloo. The events of the story span almost twenty years, ending after the student uprisings of 1832, an actual historical event.

Les Miserables has been translated into 21 languages. It has been performed in 223 cities in 38 countries across the globe.

It celebrated its 9000th performance on London's West End in August 2007, where it officially became the world's longest running musical on October 9, 2006.
